Highwick: The Mage-King and the Thief

By Jason E. Collinge

Saika Corbin Enters Nobinne's Chamber Window

In the Victorian-esque Empire of Ann co-inhabited by demons and spirit creatures drawn from the Japanese pantheon, which collectively labels them Youkai, resides an aging emperor striving to maintain power while awaiting the birth of his heir.  Resenting humans, especially the emperor, a Youkai demon-lord schemes for vengeance for a five century old wrong.  Gradually driven insane with stolen-power and neurotic obsessions, a religious leader wages a secret war against both.  Into this realm of tri-cornered political machinations and betrayal, where nothing and no one is ever quite what appearances suggest, step the lonely mage Geryon, the daring thief Saika, the retired sailor Old Mort, and their charge Little Ashta.

In Geryon Asher and Saika Corbin’s world, the monstrous Youkai have been mere bedtime tales to most since their failed war against King Jerred.  Now, they have emerged under the leadership of Lord Mugé to threaten the Empire with their ravening bloodlust.  Yet, only a few people even believe these terrifying creatures still exist and fewer still have the power to battle against them.  Even the magic of Geryon Asher can offer little hope.

To defeat the horror of the Youkai under Lord Mugé’s leadership, he must gain help from the lost tower of Highwick and the Leith Tome hidden within.  But, Geryon can not do it alone.  With the aid of a talented thief and an old sailor, yet burdened with the charge of a young girl, the mage sets out to cross the empire to the ancient home of the mages.  What he may find there, he does not know for certain – and only dares to hope!

One will reign, and one will fall.  Many will perish, but one – one will find a destiny beyond belief and resurrect an ancient mystery so powerful it will forever alter a civilization. Which will it be?  Will it be enough?  Will anyone be able to live with the ramifications of their actions?

Mr. Rat's Tenth Tale

By Jason E. Collinge

When the thieving members of Bent Pen Gang gathered for their annual storytelling and bragging contest in a darkened attic on Vancouver's notorious East Hastings, they did not anticipate Mr. Thaddeus J. Rat's brilliant treachery, nor could they predict the lasting infamy his tale would engender for the inky assemblage.
