Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is any of the art for sale? Can I buy it anywhere?
Although Jason has yet to find a publisher that is the right fit for his novels, there are various items displaying his artwork for sale on Red Bubble in the FictiveArt shop. Failing that, you are welcome to contact us directly either through this website or by locating us on Facebook at Rumours of the Fictive Art.
2) Can you provide a blurb for my book?
Publishers and writers often send manuscripts with a request to read the book and give them a quotable quote to use on the back cover. It takes several hours to read a book, and we receive approximately five to ten of these requests a week, which could turn into a full-time job if I allowed it to do so. Choosing a few of the books to blurb doesn’t make things any easier, partly due to the length of time it requires to make well-informed choices, and partly because choosing between books is like choosing which of your two best friends should be your best man. No matter which you choose, someone is going to feel crushed. So, our usual answer is no, to this particular oft-repeated request.
3) Can you read my manuscript and help me get published?
We understand the difficultly with which writers are often faced. However, for legal reasons, we cannot read unpublished manuscripts.
4) Can you tell me what a particular poem / novel ending / symbol means?
Often, students and other curious readers ask questions about the interpretation of one of the works. They pose questions such as, “This book ends ambiguously. We aren’t really told what happened to Character X. Can you tell me what really happened?” Sometimes, they might ask, “Critic X says Y about your use of Z. Do you agree or disagree?” There are two points to be made about these types of questions. First, what the author thinks happened is already in the book. Second, the host, Jason, is not comfortable giving interpretations of his work because if he were to provide any interpretation, it might soon become the definitive interpretation, which would hinder readers from discovering their own meanings and interpretations of the work. The same goes for Jason's opinions concerning his visual art. He tries to limit the expression of his opinions on his own art until after others have had the opportunity to develop and voice theirs.
5) Can you come and read at our university / reading series / charity fundraiser?
At the moment, our host, Jason is searching for that perfect agent for his new novel, whom he suspects is lurking just behind the next stack of rejection letters. Yes, he gets those, too. So, he is not accepting many speaking or reading engagements. If you would like your event to be considered for a future date, please sent us a note with your contact information and basic details concerning the event, time and date, etcetera.
6) Can you donate something for my charitable cause?
Besides requests to read for charities, Jason receives many requests to donate autographed books, personal items, or money to various charities. He reviews the requests for financial donations once a year and makes decisions at that time. With regards to donations for physical items, because of the volume of requests he receives, he has had to limit donations somewhat, and while he does support a number of causes, he is sometimes hard pressed to fill all the requests, and must regretfully turn down some groups. However, if you would like your event to be considered for a future donation, please sent us a note with your charity contact information and basic details concerning the charity.
7) Can I have permission to reprint a Collinge work?
Publishers usually control the rights to give permission to include an excerpt or story in an anthology, so these requests should generally be sent to them. The publisher’s addresses are usually on the back of the title page of the book in question. If they do not control the rights you desire, we are pretty certain they will forward your request to whomever does.
8) What is the host's favourite book? Colour? Food?
We receive a rather alarming number of requests for lists of the host's favourite things. Generally, we decline answering these sorts of questions, as Jason has difficulty deciding on favourites in a universe in a state of constant flux. The best answers he could give would be dependent upon minute influences such as weather, mood, planet rotation, and that undigested bit of gristle nagging just before bed. Therefore, what might be said to be true of Jason's favourites today, may not be necessarily true tomorrow - or it may. That is the wonder of it!
